What a great idea. Britain can be glad to have museums like that (while others like the National Portrait Gallery and its copyfraud policies are, of course, much less desirable examples).

In Germany, you usually get no support at all in public museums. The only contact are legal threads from the directors who consider themselves "owners" or "copyright owners" of such objects of our global cultural heritage.

Perhaps the most important item in this post is the strategy Liam provides for pitching this important concept elsewhere. When I first thought of this idea years ago, my chief barrier to putting it into action was that I could not figure out what to say that would plausibly convince a target organization -- a museum, a library, a university or any educational foundation -- to go for it. None of the "Writer in Residence" or "Artist in Residence" programs I looked at provided any useful hints that could be used. (IIRC, the descriptions limited themselves to explaining the benefits & application guidelines, which led me to conclude that the motivation for most of these programs were selfish ones, such as to help meet their requirements to be a non-profit, or to associate themselves with a known or an up-&-coming talent. I don't like being so cynical about these sorts of things, but that was my unavoidable impression.)

Another cheer from our end at Wikipedia, we hope for similar things to happen in the future. We would really like your support with the Smithsonian outreach and hope that you will help us with ideas and creating that sustainable relationship that everyone wants.

Congrats, Liam! You've taken the most out of just one month!!!
I'm sure this experience will open the way for more Wikipedians-in-Residence programmes, be it in museums or other institutions.

Have a fruitful meeting in Poland!
by the way, on Tuesday, I'll meet at my museum with the local Wikipedian I mentioned had asked for an encounter for a future possible collaboration. He'll attend in poland, too)
More details soon;)
